The first couple of weeks was learning the basic understanding of media. I also learnt what I would have to do in my primarily and main task. I was given taster lessons in different fields of media to decide if I wanted to chose the Film or the magazine task. After looking at what was required for each I decided on pursing the film task because filming is my media passion. Before I started the task I had to do research on Todorov and his theories on the audience also Propp's character theories and how each film has the 7 broad character types. I was also taught about the differences in a audience and how they are slip into different classification such as A, B, C1, C2, D and E and how these groups apply to different shows and films. I also analysed film posters and magazine covers to see how they have an effect on the audience and how they apply to certain people.
Lighting is extremely useful in film making. Like the human
eye camera can only pick up objects reflected by light so it is important the
lights are used correctly. Lighting should be used to effect the needs of the
film. The lighting set can provide a different mood, emotion or atmosphere.
Without this light no film shot would have any exposure which means the
director cannot get the necessary point they are trying to get across. Too much
light can also ruin a shot as it will cause over exposure.
Key Light
The key light is used to bring out the most definition on
the subject and is the main light. It is placed to the side of the subject to
make one side light and the other shadowed.
Fill Light
The fill light is the secondary light. This is placed on the
opposite side from the key light. This should be duller than the key light as
it is used to fill in the shadow created from the key light. This creates a
softer effect.
Backing Light
The backing light is always behind the subject. This will
bring the subject out of the background and give them more definition. This
doesn’t provide direct light rather than fills in the subject. This gives the
three dimensional look.
8/OCT/13 - Week 2
This week I had to create my preliminary task but before I could film I had to create the storyboard. The task was for a character to open a door then walk across the room. The character must then sit down and engage in dialogue with another character. The task also needed match on match action, shot reverse shot and 180 degree rule. First I had to plan what was going to be the dialogue and what shots would I use. Once I had figured this out I turned the plan into a storyboard.
When creating the story board I had to draw a picture of the shot I was going to use. Next to the picture their is a description of what is going on in the shot. I also wrote technical details next to this including the camera angles and transitions.
15/OCT/13 - Week 3
This week I used my planning to create my preliminary video. I used the storyboard to make sure that I used the correct camera angles when filming. when I was filming some of the shots looked better on paper so I took a few extra shots from different angles to make sure that it was good in the edit. Once i had managed to film all of my shots i started my edit on premier pro. I already had a basic understanding of premier but still needed more skills before my final opening sequence.
22/OCT/13 - Week 4
This week I continued with the edit of my preliminary task. Over the weekend i watch a couple of videos online showing me how to do certain tasks in premier pro. I used these new learnt skills to improve my preliminary. Once I had finished the edit i uploaded the preliminary to my Blogger account under the page name Primarily material. after i inserted the video I wrote a small paragraph explaining what the video was. Underneath the video I scanned in my primarily storyboard to show as evidence of my planning for the video
29/OCT/13 - Week 5
This week I had to create my two opening sequence analyse. For this i had to watch to similar film opening and analyse both of them. I analysed the camera angles and effects on the audience. I did this so i could use the effects in my film opening that's is why the opening i chose has to be similar. The two opening i chose where The Dark Knight and Quantum of solace.
5/NOV/13 - Week 6
This week I completed my two opening sequences analyse and uploaded it to Blogger. I then started to research film questionnaires to get ideas for mine. this week i also did extra work and research camera angles and lighting to use on my opening. Once i had a good idea of what questions to ask i wrote them down and created a questionnaire on survey monkey.
12/NOV/13 - Week 7
This week i got my results back from the questionnaire i created. I then turned this information into charts and graphs and then used this in the questionnaire analyse. In the questionnaire analyse i broke down each question and explained how i would use the information i had collected in my own opening sequence.
19/NOV/13 - Week 8
This week I created the Vox Pops. First i had to write the questions i was going to ask. the questions i chose were to do with my opening sequence and i was hoping i could get information to help my final opening. To get the information i interviewed my target audience and asked them my set questions. The interview was completed on camera so i could evidence it later. Once i had all of the footage i edited it on premier pro and made the question appear as a title before the answers are shown. all interviews were edited to only have the key information
26/NOV/13 - Week 9
This week I created my initial ideas and wrote a short story started for each. I made sure that the short story starters had what props were being used as well as a character bio. The story must be a brief story but in full. Once I had all of my ideas I chose which one was the best and then decides to turn this into my opening.
3/DEC/13 - Week 10
This week I wrote the script from my chosen initial idea. I read other other block buster scripts to see how an action/thriller script is displayed. the scripts i used was the opening to "The Bourne Identity" and "The Dark knight" both scripts had similar aspects in common. They both out lined out the choreography in a lot of detail because they needed to display the action perfectly including the fights and guns. When creating my own script I followed the story line that i had created and made sure that all of the dialogue was perfect and ever shot was going to work. I was able to picture every shot in my head but was sceptical on other so i took some test shots just to make sure they would have worked in the film. once the script was created i got my friends and teacher to read it and we discussed it in detail. the only improvement was i needed to add was more description of how the character should be feeling and how they react to different dialogues.
10/DEC/13 - Week 11
This week I finished my storyboard which i created by taking all of the shots from my script and adding them into a shot list. The shot list was then transferred into a storyboard. the storyboard is extremely useful as it gives a clear overview of what angle you want of over shot when filming and how it will look in the final run the storyboard also go into small details like transitions and the start and stop of music. When I start filming this will be very useful and will make creating my vision from the script a lot easier. This week I also created the location report and risk assessment. The risk assessment was good as it was like a safety out line and covered every aspect of any injury that is possible when filming it all so tell you what to do if that safety precaution is broken. This week i also arrange when i will get my cast and crew together and film my opening.
17/DEC/13 - Week 12
This week everything was focused on filming. I managed to find a time that all my cast and crew could do which was over a weekend. whilst waiting for the weekend I watched loads of videos on tips and tricks about how to get a productive filming session another video that I found very useful was a video on how to choreograph a good fight scene. I took many ideas from this clip. Over the weekend I filmed my opening on one day and tried to keep all the shots over 3 hours so the sun wound not change position this is due to me wanting to keep a certain theme going. The actors did very well and my whole crew in general was very helpful. I followed the storyboard and the script that I had created by every step also I added in a couple extra shots just to see if i wanted to use them during editing.
24/DEC/13 - Week 13
This week was spent editing all of the footage. The footage that i had obtained the weekend before was really good and now all i had to do was complete the edit. During my edit I picked up on certain effects also transition played a very key role in my opening as it just made the change between shots so much smoother. I gained a lot of my editing skills through my teacher but if I ever needed extra help of anything their were many useful YouTube videos that were good and focusing on the key point I wanted.
31/DEC/13 - Week 14
This week i continued with the edit. Whilst making the edit I also needed to start learning about after effects and how to create a opening production company. I again ask my media teacher for help and to give me the basic skills. they were happy to and gave me lots of useful tips to get me started. so after i got the grips with it I began to create some practice companies. I then used the internet to further increase my skills in after effects.
7/JAN/14 - Week 15
This week i finished my edit as well as my opening company. I then put them both together and ask my teachers to look at my completed video. they gave me improvements that i then went back to improve. they were simple adjustments like timing. Once everyone was happy with my opening i uploaded it to YouTube and then transferred it to Blogger.
14/JAN/14 - Week 16
With all of my practical work done i then focused my attention on completing the evidence questions. When creating the evidence questions i wanted to make sure that i used a variety of explanation this included video/Text and prezies. Each question I gave a full length answer for and once i had completed all 7 questions i went over all of my work to make sure everything was completed.
